Choosing the Right Shade of Foundation

Foundation is one of the basics of makeup and getting the right shade for your skin tone is the most important thing that can spell the difference between a natural looking makeup look and looking like you overdid the makeup on your face. One of the first thing you should do is to find out which kind of foundation is right for your skin type. The types of foundation range from pressed powder, loose powder, cream formulations, liquid, mousse and liquid foundation. Knowing which type to buy will depend on whether you have dry, oily or combination skin. For those with dry skin, liquid and cream-based foundations are best for you, especially those that are labelled with “hydrating” or “moisturising” on the label. Powder types would work best on oily skin, particularly those that are “mattifying”, “oil-free” and have “oil control” properties. People with combination skin on the other hand, can choose from foundations that have a cream-to-powder base. Mineral makeup is now very popular among those who use makeup regularly, especially foundation, because they work very well on all skin types including for those with sensitive skin.

The next thing to consider is the kind of coverage that you want. You can usually go from light to medium coverage. If you have fairly even skin with a few blotches that you want to even out, light coverage would do for you. If your skin is generally uneven and has spots, discolouration and other unsightly marks, you can use a medium coverage foundation to even out your skin tone. Good skin care actually goes a long way in terms of its benefits for you. The best way to know whether your foundation will blend well with the rest of your face is to try it on your jawline. You can try up to three colours at once on your cheek, and the shade that blends best with your natural skin tone is the shade for you.

You can go up to one to two shades lighter or darker than your natural skin colour, as long as it does not look too different from your natural skin colour. Try looking at the shade from a source of natural light such as near a door or a window to check if your foundation’s colour already looks natural enough. The right shade will disappear into your skin, making it hardly noticeable even under bright natural light. If you have pimples or other blemishes, use a concealer on top of foundation to make your skin look more flawless and clean. Using a foundation with sunscreen is beneficial for your skin as it helps prevent the signs of premature aging such as wrinkles, dark spots and uneven skin tone.
