15 Easy Ways to Save Water

Water is perhaps the one of the world’s most abundant yet taken-for-granted resource. Despite our planet being made up mostly of water, we still experience some sort of water scarcity. It is predicted that in the next few decades, the Earth’s water supply will diminish significantly.

Everyone can do their part to save water, here are some simple things that you can do:

1. Do not let the water run when you are washing dishes. Try using basins for rinsing so that you use less water for your household chores.

2. Adjust your lawn sprinklers so that only the grass on your garden is sprinkled with just the right amount of water, without it spilling into the pavement.

3. Load your laundry once a week and group whites and coloured clothes together so that you can wash and rinse them at the same time without staining. Washing dark clothes in cold water also helps them keep their colour and saves water and energy.

4. Regularly check your faucets and pipes for leaks.

5. Store rainwater in water tanks for use in cleaning the car and your lawn. There are a variety of poly tanks available in the market which makes for safer water storage without contamination.

6. Wash fresh produce like fruits and vegetables in a basin of water instead of running water from the faucet.

7. Check your pool regularly for leaks if you have one in your home.

8. Always remember to close the faucets when not in use. This is a particularly important habit to instil in young children especially if you have them in your home.

9. Switch to a showerhead that is water-efficient. To check, see if your shower is able to fill a one=gallon bucket in 20 seconds or less. In this case, replace your showerhead with one that does not waste as much water.

10. When bathing your pets, wash them on the lawn or in an area of your garden that also needs watering.

11. Keep a bucket or basin in the shower to catch water while it is heating or running. You can use this water to flush toilets, water plants or when bathing your pet.

12. Check how many gallons of water is used for every flush in your toilet. You can install a water tank in your toilet that uses less water but flushes just as efficiently.

13. During the summer, you can water you lawn every three weeks as dormant grass needs to be watered less frequently, especially when it rains.

14. Do not overwater your plants, more plants die from too much watering than from lack of water.

15. Use your dishwasher and washing machine only for full loads. You can store water from these in medium water tanks for use in house and car cleaning.
